Stopped in on the road to Birmingham. I've been seeing Tops signs from the road and I knew I had to give it a try. Big plus is the atmosphere, no frills "fast food place" kind of atmosphere and simple menu. Ribs, Burgers, Pork Sandwiches and Brisket Sandwiches. Classic crabby cashier takes your order between reprimands to the rest of the staff. You can eat in or take out. They also have racks of Brim's Potato Chips Disappointment was in the food. My brisket sandwich was bland and greasy. Definitely needed some better sauce. I requested the hot sauce and couldn't taste much at all. Beans likewise were greasy and bland. There are places I would rather go than this place. It's not bad but there are better.

For local BBQ, Tops is where to go within the 10 - 15 mile area of Olive Branch. Being part of the BBQ capital you do have lots of choices. This BBQ joint has what you need if your wanting the basics for the family or a party.

I always buy a whole pork shoulder for parties. Everything is good here.

We walked from our hotel (Fairfield) to Tops. We almost walked away thinking they were closing because they already had all of the chairs stacked on the tables. It was 930pm and their sign showed they closed at 1130pm. I poked my head in to ask the woman sweeping if they were opened and in a tone that implied I was really bothering her, she said yes. So we came in, the place was pretty dirty, as if this was the first time it had been swept all day. If not for desire to grab some Memphis BBQ we probably would have walked due to this, but we gave them the benefit of the doubt and ordered. The two women that came out to help were every bit as pleasant as the first. Very unfriendly and showed a general unhappiness with life itself. Since I don't frequent this establishment I don't know if this is typical. We may have just caught them on a bad day (uh-huh). Anyway, the food came pretty fast (there were four of us). We had the pork plate, a brisket sandwich , and ribs. Everything was tasty, but not outstanding. If I was only ranking the food, it would have gotten 3 stars. This rating is based on the overall experience (and almost took it down to 1 star). If I'm back this way I'll look for other places to try.

Sooooo good! Was passing through my old home town and I had to make a special stop here. The West Coast doesn't know what they are missing all the BBQ I have had there was a huge disappointment. TOPS is awesome the sauce is awesomerrrrrr.

We stop in here after a funeral and we all got the beef brisket combo the sandwich was good but the meat had a lot of fat I mean it was loaded with fat I really couldn't enjoy it for taking the fat off.

As a last minute dinner idea, I decided to call ahead and place a to-go order. It was easy enough. Then, when I got to this location, I discovered they had a drive thru. I'm skeptical at this point. What I ordered: 1 Jumbo Pulled pork sandwich, beans, fries, sweet tea 1 Regular Pulled pork sandwich with slaw, beans, and potato salad The order was delivered to me as placed (1 star for getting it right the first time). Review of the food: The pulled pork had too much fat on it for my liking. It was moist, but mediocre, at best. The sauce was not my flavor. It wasn't sweet, tangy, or hot. It was just wet. The slaw was ok, nothing to write home about. The beans were the best thing about the whole meal. The were the perfect consistency with chopped bbq meat inside. They were very flavorful. The potato salad had mustard in it, which is not high on my list. I wouldn't get it again. My date had the fries. They were just standard crinkle-cut fries, nothing special there either. Would I eat here again? Maybe, but if I do, I'll have to add my own bbq sauce and grab some chips and beans instead of that potato salad.

Tops is a Memphis oldie. The have been around for decades and have been serving almost the same thing the whole time. They just recently in the last couple years reached out to Beef Brisket and Ribs. There main focus was always pulled pork and there majorly underrated burgers. While growing up I was accustomed to this place over off of Quince and Getwell. We used to go and get BBQ from them all the time. My Dad loved the place! This location is fair to sub par as far as service is concerned. I wouldn't come in looking to be impressed by ambiance or basic human courtesies. It's more of a look down and get some "pretty good BBQ" to eat. I like everything they have most of the time as a weekday meal for the family. Ribs are good 8.68 times out of 10. Pulled pork is mostly dry and I avoid it most of the time. Brisket is ok. Burgers are made to order and may be the most consistent thing they have.

Great BBQ. Tops is my best place to eat BBQ in the Memphis area. I have been eating at here since the day they opened.

One of those places that you have tailor your expectations to what you are really wanting Some really good food, but overall really some dive like service and cleanliness. Cashier was far from friendly nor attentive. But I was looking for good BBQ right? Place is really old and outdated, cleanliness is really lacking. At the end of the day I enjoyed my jumbo shoulder sandwich with slaw and even went back for seconds. Baked beans were okay and the slaw was made with mustard; something I hadn't expected, but liked. Due to the cleanliness factor and service I'll most likely seek out some other BBQ joints first before ever returning here.

Looked this place up online before a roadtrip through the area, it came up on the top of several "best BBQ in Memphis" lists so we planned to stop in and try it. Us girls love us some BBQ. SO GLAD WE DID. I texted my husband after the first bite 'life changing BBQ just outside of Memphis, TOPS!" Such a good juicy pork sandwich with what can only be described as the tastiest BBQ sauce I've ever had. I can't even put my finger on what was in there, it was different, but somehow better than anything I've ever tried. The meal comes with 2 sides and a drink for a steal. Would have been a 5 star affair but lost that last star because the beans were just an 85%, not the full 100% the sandwich earned. I also would have enjoyed a little background music, it would have made the dining room a little more comfortable. I felt like everyone in there was just staring at me and we could hear everyone's conversations. But oh the food.

Bbq was very fatty, not very good, bbq was very vinegery tasting, very sloppy on the plate (we had jumbo brisket plate) baked beans rollin off side of plate, tater salad had baked beans over flowing into it....plate was just a mess!

Love some Tops. Great food, especially for the price. Great BBQ and the burgers are really good and cooked to order.

The one beauty of living in the barbeque capital is the sheer variety is the barbeque places in the area. There is probably a barbeque joint to suit every tastebud and wallet. Tops has been here since 1952 to fit the bill for many people. The prices are especially reasonable. A sandwich combo comes with a sandwich, medium drink and choice of 2 side items (fries, beans, chips or coleslaw) and the price ranges from 4.65 to 6.20. This is cheap considering you get 2 sides versus only one at most fast food chains. The barbeque itself is juicy, tender and smoky. The sauce is definitely more vinegar based and less sweet than most. I recommend the slaw on the barbeque. Also, if you want a huge hamburger or cheeseburger, call ahead so they have time to cook it. My co-worker brought a dub-l-cheeseburger and it was easily 2 meals. The patties are thin and fried. It's a greasy affair but tasty. Tops is nothing fancy but if you want simple and price friendly, then it should get top-billing. P.S. the baked beans are really good, too!
